How did the microG project start?
I removed Google apps and services from my first smartphone back in 2012. One of the biggest issues at the time—when using CyanogenMod without Google services—was that GPS became extremely slow. It could consume around 2–3% of battery time before it managed to get a solid location fix. To solve that, I created an alternative to Google’s network-based location component.
Later, I really wanted to play a game that required signing in with a Google account. That made me build an alternative component for managing Google account sign-in. Those early efforts became the foundation of microG, though the project grew much larger once Google started providing Play Services, which became an ever-expanding set of proprietary services.
Do you work alone, or do you have other developers?

I started microG as an open-source project and welcomed contributions from anyone interested. More than 50 people have contributed code to the project.
