Kodi Introduction

Kodi Kodi is a free open-source media centre for Android that brings movies, TV, music, and photos together. Search by keywords, customize playback, and get smarter recommendations as you watch.

Kodi

Kodi is a well-known open-source media streaming app. With Kodi, you can explore the latest headlines, watch popular movies, and listen to great music. Just type in relevant keywords to quickly find what you’ll enjoy, tailoring the experience to your viewing habits.

It also includes a large library of movies and TV resources across many genres—such as action, comedy, romance, and crime. Watch your favorite shows whenever and wherever you want, and fine-tune your setup (like picture quality and on-screen comments) to create a comfortable viewing experience. As you keep watching, Kodi will suggest more content that matches your preferences, so each session can uncover new favorites.

FAQs

What is Kodi?

Kodi

Kodi is a free open-source (GPL) multi-platform multimedia centre. It helps you centralise local files, network media, and internet content in one convenient place. Kodi is intended to be installed on devices connected directly to your AVR or TV—ideally using HDMI.

How is Kodi different from other media players?

Kodi keeps your content organised in one location. It can play many kinds of media—video, audio, and images—and it also lets you build libraries for easy browsing in a visually rich interface. It supports content types such as:

  • Movies, TV Shows, seasons, and episodes
  • Kodi

  • Music and audiobooks
  • Music videos
  • Live TV and PVR
  • Pictures and comic books

Kodi also includes a large collection of Add-ons (plugins). You can install them to add new features or to access online content from sources like YouTube, Netflix, and many more.

Can I use Kodi as a Media Server?

Kodi includes a built-in UPnP server that can stream music and video from your Kodi library to other devices. It can also act as a UPnP client to receive content from other servers on your local network.

That said, aside from the UPnP component, Kodi isn’t designed as a full server solution. Typically, each viewing location runs its own Kodi instance on the hardware connected to the local AVR or TV. During normal use, Kodi reads content from your hard drive or from local network storage using file-sharing protocols such as SMB.

IMPORTANT: The official Kodi version does not include any built-in content. You’re expected to add your own materials from local or remote storage, DVDs, Blu-rays, or other media you own. Kodi also allows third-party plugins, which may provide access to content available through the official providers’ websites. Team Kodi does not endorse or approve methods for watching illegal, paid content.

Estuary is the new standard skin, built to feel fast and simple to use. With the Estouchy skin, Kodi is improved for larger 5-inch or bigger phones and tablets. Kodi is not designed for—and is not recommended for—smaller phones.

Summary

It offers a 10-foot user interface made for living rooms, with remote-control navigation. You can browse and access different types of digital media—such as videos, photos, podcasts, and music—coming from multiple sources including hard drives, optical discs, local networks, and the internet.
