Duolingo is a popular language-learning app designed to help you communicate more confidently in many different languages. Instead of long study sessions, it focuses on short, bite-sized lessons to improve your skills in more than a dozen languages.

When you start, the app places you based on your current baseline level. After you pick a language and choose how long you want to study, you can begin building your vocabulary, grammar, and even pronunciation. Lessons rely on interactive exercises, many of which include audio so you can get used to each language’s accent.

How Duolingo lessons work

Lessons are organized into units, each with its own topics. Inside a unit, you’ll find multiple lessons, and every lesson has 5 difficulty levels that increase as you go. The app only introduces new units after you complete the lessons in the current one.

New vocabulary is usually taught using pictures, while key grammar is explained at the start of each lesson. You can also revisit vocabulary and grammar later through the “tips” section. Lesson types may include:

• Sentence arrangement activities
• Multiple-choice questions

In sentence arrangement tasks, you’ll often be given a sentence in the source language and asked to reorder it into a grammatically correct sentence in the target language. Some exercises can be reversed as well.
