Duolingo Introduction

Duolingo Duolingo is a popular language-learning app with short daily lessons in 40+ languages. Choose your level, practice vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and track your progress with gamified challenges.

Duolingo

Duolingo is a popular language-learning app designed to help you communicate more confidently in many different languages. Instead of long study sessions, it focuses on short, bite-sized lessons to improve your skills in more than a dozen languages.

When you start, the app places you based on your current baseline level. After you pick a language and choose how long you want to study, you can begin building your vocabulary, grammar, and even pronunciation. Lessons rely on interactive exercises, many of which include audio so you can get used to each language’s accent.

  • A well-known language-learning app that teaches through quick daily lessons on your phone.

  • Duolingo

  • A cheerful widget featuring Duo the owl (Duolingo’s mascot) to encourage you to practice.

Robust progress tracking

Duolingo uses a strict algorithm that continually evaluates your level. This reduces the chance that you’ll get stuck with lessons that are far too hard. Over time, even when the lessons feel easy, you’re still making real progress toward learning a new language.

Consistency matters: a little practice each day can grow into a major learning “treasure” over time.

Daily goals, streaks, achievements, and rewards

  • Daily goals and streaks: you’ll receive a reasonable daily learning goal, and your persistence is tracked through streaks.
  • Achievements and rewards: study steadily and you’ll unlock rewards. Duolingo’s in-app currency is Lingots, which you earn by completing activities.
  • Skills visualization: during learning, you can view charts that show your level, making it easier to track improvements and stay motivated.

How Duolingo lessons work

Lessons are organized into units, each with its own topics. Inside a unit, you’ll find multiple lessons, and every lesson has 5 difficulty levels that increase as you go. The app only introduces new units after you complete the lessons in the current one.

New vocabulary is usually taught using pictures, while key grammar is explained at the start of each lesson. You can also revisit vocabulary and grammar later through the “tips” section. Lesson types may include:

Duolingo

  • Listening and speaking exercises
  • Flashcards
  • Sentence arrangement activities
  • Multiple-choice questions

In sentence arrangement tasks, you’ll often be given a sentence in the source language and asked to reorder it into a grammatically correct sentence in the target language. Some exercises can be reversed as well.

Designed for everyone

Duolingo supports learners at many stages, and lessons are personalized. The app regularly checks whether the pace and level are suitable for you, so even beginners learning English don’t have to worry about moving too fast or starting at the wrong difficulty.

Memorize vocabulary with spaced repetition

Duolingo uses the Spaced Repetition technique, repeating information over longer periods to help it stick. This method is built around how human memory works. Since Duolingo’s lessons repeatedly revisit vocabulary, learning and memorizing—especially for English vocabulary—tends to be more effective.

Set goals and keep going

Everyone has moments when motivation drops—taking a break and then forgetting to continue. Duolingo helps by encouraging regular practice so your focus and learning progress improve.

When you open the app, you choose a goal based on your learning needs, including how much you plan to complete each day.
