Balatro Introduction

Balatro Balatro is a poker-inspired roguelike deck-building strategy game where you craft powerful combos using wild cards and 150+ Jokers. Win rounds, beat blinds, and build decks for bigger chip scores.

Balatro

Balatro is a fan-favorite card strategy game packed with an enormous range of card combinations to experiment with. With 150+ Jokers, each one offering a distinct ability, you can pick your favorite Joker and build around its advantage. Your goal is to craft strong poker-style hands using both effective combinations and wild cards to create decks that score higher—earning enough chips to win.

Every draw is a chance to sharpen your decisions and push toward bigger scores and victory.

Gameplay

Run Overview (Single-Player Roguelike Deck-Building)

Balatro is a single-player roguelike deck-builder inspired by poker rules. Before each run, you choose a starting deck—each deck comes with its own effects and card lineup. Runs are split into antes, and every ante contains three blinds that get harder as you progress.

During a fight against a blind, you’re limited by the number of hands you can play and the number of discards you can use. You must play poker hands, aim to reach the required chip total, and manage your limited resources.

To make blinds easier, you can buy cards and items between rounds. These purchases are made in the shop using an in-game currency.

Blinds

Blinds are the main challenges you must defeat. There are three main categories: Small Blind, Big Blind, and Boss Blind.

  • Small Blind / Big Blind: You can either play them or skip them.
  • Skipping a blind: You give up the cash reward and the chance to shop, but you receive a tag with special benefits.
  • Tags: Many tags grant something when you enter the next shop (for example, free cards or booster packs). Some tags trigger instantly or activate when certain conditions are met.
  • Boss Blind: Each Boss Blind type has a special rule that can restrict or alter your strategy (such as disabling specific cards or limiting hands/discards).

Starting at Ante 8 (and for every ante that’s a multiple of 8), a Showdown Blind replaces the Boss Blind. This Showdown Blind is drawn from five special types that don’t appear in other situations.

Antes and Rounds

Each ante has three rounds:

  • Round 1: Small Blind
  • Round 2: Big Blind
  • Round 3: Boss Blind (or Showdown Blind at Ante 8 and multiples of 8)

In each round, you have a limited number of hands to beat a target score, plus a limited number of discards. With discards, you can replace up to five cards in your hand with different cards.

The run ends immediately if you run out of hands or cards before you reach the target score.

Scoring, Hands, and Jokers

At the start of each round, you draw cards from your deck. You begin the game with a standard 52-card deck, but cards can be added, altered, or removed during the run.

On your turn, you choose up to five cards to form poker hands. Your hand has a base value that becomes Chips, and then your total is multiplied by Mult, which grows based on the cards you use, the specific hands you play, and the Jokers you’re holding.

Jokers influence gameplay in many ways—such as boosting Chips or Mult when conditions are met, or changing how certain poker hands can be played.

After Beating a Blind

When you defeat a blind, you receive cash ($) and then get access to a shop. You can spend your cash on items including booster packs, Jokers, and vouchers that grant an immediate permanent upgrade—for example, changing what appears in the shop, or giving an extra hand or discard.

Endless Mode Note (Ante 39 Overflow Behavior)

In endless mode, it’s possible to keep going until ante 39. At that point, the required chip amount (stored using double-precision floating-point) can overflow to infinity, which then becomes NaN in that number format.

Balatro

Because the game compares values (including NaN) as unordered when compared to NaN, the target score can’t be evaluated as equal to or greater than NaN. As a result, progression becomes impossible.

This is shown in-game as either “nan” or “naneinf” (NaN times ten to the power of infinity, written in E notation).

End of a Run

You win a run by completing Ante 8—specifically by defeating the first Showdown Blind. You can still continue playing if you’re in endless mode.

If you run out of hands or cards during a round without hitting the required score, the run ends. If you haven’t completed Ante 8 by the time the game ends, you lose. In endless mode, the run can still end under these same conditions, but you still “win” the overall run by completing Ante 8.
