How to Play (Rules of Yono Rummy)
Number of cards and players
- Cards per player: In Indian rummy, each player receives 13 cards from a standard deck.
- Players: The game is typically played with 2 to 6 players.
- Decks used:
- 2 players: two decks (104 cards + jokers)
- 3–6 players: three decks (156 cards + jokers)
- Dealing: All cards are shuffled and distributed evenly. Any remaining cards form the draw pile.
Goal of the game

Your objective is to be the first player to arrange all 13 cards into valid combinations and declare by laying down your cards on the table.
Combinations come in two main types: sequences and sets.
- Sequence (Run): 3 or more cards of the same suit in order (example: 5♣–6♣–7♣). Sequences are also called runs.
- Set (Trio/Group): 3 cards (sometimes 4) of the same rank but different suits (example: J♣–J♥–J♠). Sets are also known as trios or groups.
Jokers
- Each deck includes two printed jokers.
- At the start of the match, the game may also designate a random card as an extra joker (a wild card).
- What jokers do: Jokers can replace any card that’s missing in a combination.
- Important limitation: At least one sequence must be “clean”, meaning it contains no joker.
- Clean example: 8♥–9♥–10♥
- Unclean example: 8♥–9♥–Joker
- Winning requirement: You need at least one clean sequence to win.

Gameplay flow
Rummy is played using a cycle of “pick a card – discard a card”.
- On your turn, you draw one card from either:
- the closed (draw) pile, or
- the top card from the discard pile.
- After drawing, you must discard one card into the open pile.
- You will then have 13 cards in your hand again.
- Play continues clockwise (in some versions, it may be anti-clockwise) until someone forms the required combinations and declares the finish by placing their cards on the table.
Declaration and scoring
When you believe you’ve met all conditions (you’ve formed the required combinations, including at least two sequences with at least one clean sequence), you can declare the end of the game on your turn.
- You lay out your combinations openly.
- If the combinations are verified as correct, you win the round.
- Other players receive penalty points based on the value of cards still left in their hand (usually face cards count by value, such as 2–9; picture cards count as 10; and Aces count as 10 or 1 based on agreement). Jokers do not award points.
- The fewer points you hold at the end, the better. That’s why it’s often smart to discard “heavy” cards during the match.
In some rummy variations, matches continue until a set point target or until a certain number of hands are completed, after which the overall winner is decided.
Move example
Imagine you already have:
- A clean sequence: ♠7–♠8–♠9
- A set: ♥K–♦K–♣K
- Another sequence: ♣Q–♣K–♣A
- And your remaining card is a joker

If you use the joker to replace ♦J for a sequence like ♦10–♦J–♦Q, then your conditions are satisfied (including two sequences with at least one clean). You can then declare the game over by laying down all combinations. If other players still have cards they didn’t manage to arrange, they score points for those remaining cards.
