ARK Survival Evolved

ARK Survival Evolved is a widely known open-world survival adventure set on a mysterious island called ARK. Players are dropped into an unforgiving environment where they can either cooperate or compete alongside hundreds of other players. Your goals revolve around gathering resources, crafting tools and traps, and hunting dinosaurs. As you advance, you can tame dinosaurs and have them fight for your team—eventually helping your herd rise to become the dominant force on the island.

The game also includes a breeding/defense-style mechanic: by pairing tamed animals, you can work toward producing even more dangerous dinosaurs. Taming isn’t the only priority, though. To truly conquer the ARK, you must grow your settlement through crafting, crop farming, and livestock management.

In addition, there’s a Workshop system that lets you create and publish mods. Using the in-game editor, you can build custom content and share it with the community to earn likes and support from other players.

Gameplay Overview

The world currently features 194 creatures. Early versions leaned heavily on real dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals, but later updates expanded the roster with legendary creatures like the wyvern, griffin, golem, and phoenix. With subsequent expansions, entirely original species also arrived—such as the Karkinos and Velonasaur—along with original robotic creatures like the Enforcer and Scout.

Taming Creatures (Core Mechanic)

Taming is central to ARK Survival Evolved. Most creatures can be tamed, though some are exceptions (for example: Meganeura, Trilobites, and Titanomyrma).

How you tame a creature depends on the species:

• Knockout taming: Many creatures require you to knock them out using tranquilizers or blunt weapons (like a club). Often, you must keep the target sedated until the tame completes.
• Different tame times: Some dinosaurs take longer, which means you’ll typically need more narcotics.
• Feeding to finish: After the creature is knocked out, you feed it its preferred food—such as berries for herbivores or meat for carnivores.



• Passive taming: Certain creatures (for example, Moschops) can be tamed by approaching and offering food without sedation.
• Mini-game taming: Some species (such as Carcharodontosaurus, Oasisaur, and Megaraptor) are handled through mini-games instead of sedation or passive feeding.

Commanding and Using Tames

Once you tame a creature, it follows the commands of the player who tamed it. Many tamed animals can also act as transport, letting you move across land, water, and other areas more efficiently. When mounted on certain creatures, you may still be able to use weapons.

Many tames can also carry items, and you can give them a variety of offensive and defensive commands to control fights and protect your base. Larger creatures can even support a platform on their back, effectively functioning as a small moving base (for example, platforms on animals like a Brontosaurus or Mosasaurus).

Creatures, Ecosystems, and Mythical Species

Not every creature is a dinosaur. The world also contains animals such as the dodo, saber-toothed tiger, woolly mammoth, Meganeura, ichthyosaur, and Doedicurus.

Each creature lives within its own ecosystem and follows defined predator hierarchies. The map also includes fictional species like Griffins, Wyverns, and Unicorns.

• Tame and ride 80+ creatures: Capture a broad range of dinosaurs and primitive animals. Travel by land, through water, or into the sky to reach resources and new locations. Tamed creatures can also carry items and help defend your camp.
• Deep survival, crafting, and building: Hunt, gather, and craft from early tools into stronger weapons. Build anything from a small shelter to a fortified stronghold as your experience grows. Workbenches and storage systems help you manage supplies and plan your next moves.
• Large open world with varied biomes: The island includes beaches, forests, mountains, caves, and ocean regions with distinct conditions. Exploration brings both new materials and new dangers, so preparation is important. You can travel on foot, by mount, and by water to connect bases.
• Solo play or multiplayer with Tribes: Progress alone or join shared servers. Tribe tools make group play easier by allowing resource sharing, shared progression benefits, and spawn-related coordination—helping teams coordinate taming, farming, and defense.
• Breed, command, and organize your tames: Breed creatures for different traits and assign roles such as hauling or guarding. Issue commands to make tames follow, attack, or hold position. Pens and stables help keep your base organized, efficient, and secure.

Useful Tips

• Single player start location: A beach is often a great place to begin building. It gives you easy access to water for drinking and cooling down, and depending on your surroundings, you can also find fish for food.
