Boom Beach is a strategy game that mixes base building with real-time tactical combat. You’ll be dropped onto a Pacific island and explore a wide archipelago—uncovering new locations and helping rescue captives taken from other islands. As you play, you’ll need to make smart choices, keep improving your island, and launch raids against enemy bases to gather resources. Your mission is simple: build your own base and attack enemy islands to earn rewards.

On your journey, you can use 10+ defensive structures and a variety of offensive units. Combine them in many different ways to find the best balance between defense and offense.

How the gameplay works

Studio Supercell initially released only two free games. Even so, they generated strong revenue thanks to the large number of players purchasing virtual currency, which helped speed up development. Boom Beach was used as a kind of real-world test for Supercell’s ideas before a wider release.

The game originally launched in just two countries, letting the team study player reactions and roll out fixes before the global premiere.

Key defensive rule

The most important structure in your base is the Headquarters. If enemy forces destroy it, they automatically win. Your job is to protect it using defenses such as sniper towers, mortars, and machine guns.

Headquarters upgrades

Leveling up your Headquarters unlocks new building options. Once your base is secured, you can move on to conquering the many islands scattered throughout the surrounding sea.

Some enemy islands are controlled by the computer, while others are run by other players. Your troops land on the beach and start attacking the closest enemy structure. By default, you initiate attacks using a flare—unless you change your approach.

In the bay, you also have access to your Destroyer, which can fire multiple missiles or flares to support your assault.

Combat style

Boom Beach feels similar to Clash of Clans, but without clans or other team structures. You battle the Black Guard (computer-controlled) and also fight against other players. The overall atmosphere is more modern, with a loose inspiration from World War II and Pacific-era battles.

Strategic gameplay

You control an archipelago that you must defend and develop. You start on an island where your main base is located. While there, you design your layout and set up defenses to reduce the chances of successful raids.

You can also use traps and explosives to protect key areas. Just as important, you’ll plan your attacks against enemy bases in order to defeat them and capture their islands.

Success depends on strategy—figuring out how to use your plans to carry out effective raids.

Build an army

Your attacks rely on more than weapons—they depend on the troops you bring. There are many ways to assemble your attacker force, including different soldiers and fighters, as well as heavy units like tanks and other large-scale equipment.

Creating an effective army is a challenge that requires strong tactical management. Since enemy islands differ, you must tailor your unit lineup to match the situation.

Heroes

As a Beach commander, you’ll search the archipelago for treasures and hidden secrets. Heroes are part of what you can discover. Each hero provides a powerful superpower that can significantly influence the outcome of your battles.

The advantage with heroes is that you can upgrade them to strengthen their abilities, turning them into even more valuable members of your attack force.

Multiplayer mode

Multiplayer is available if you want to fight alongside friends. If you don’t have friends playing Boom Beach, you can still team up by joining random teams with players from around the world.

Team-based play is useful because it can pair you with skilled players. Together, you can also take part in special missions from time to time for a more cooperative experience.

Monthly events

If you’re bored of the standard routine, you can look forward to monthly events. There are multiple events each month, including the return of Mr. Crab, who brings extra rewards to add variety to your gameplay. In addition, the game also features weekly events.
