• I originally downloaded Flightradar24 because of the Skycard game (also by Flightradar24) and wanted to see where different planes were. Now I use it whenever I’m bored—it’s genuinely fascinating. It’s especially interesting when my family and friends are traveling, because it’s easy to spot whether flights are arriving late, on time, or early. I’d recommend the free version, though I eventually subscribed to the Gold plan for $40 per year.

• I like that it can show which runways are being used for takeoff and landing at each airport at the current time, and that it can display selected aircraft’s routes and waypoints. One detail I noticed: for a while, altitude changes weren’t shown continuously. Depending on the vertical speed (for example, around V/S 500 ft/min), it seemed the app would update after altitude moved by 1+ or 500—but later it started updating after changes of roughly 150–200 feet. Also, it doesn’t always show every aircraft’s exact actual time, including departure and arrival airports.

• Great for plane spotting. I’m not a huge fan of the newest versions because the ads can be intrusive, but you can usually press the back arrow to continue. I understand a service like this needs funding, and I’m not using the paid edition. The pricing feels reasonable—I just can’t afford it right now. For now, the free version works fine. I’ve found plenty of interesting planes using this app—thanks to everyone who maintains it.
