Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Introduction
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a tactical first-person shooter with realistic campaign missions, officer selection, and threat-assessment scoring. Team up in multiplayer, explore maps, and compete in Realism mode.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a popular first-person shooter where you lead your squad through a series of campaign missions. Depending on the mission you’re tackling, you can choose from three officers and then build your approach around the right weapons, precise aiming, and the ability to anticipate enemy movement to secure objectives and come out on top.
The game includes both a single-player campaign and multiplayer competitive modes. Team up with friends, face players worldwide, and fight for the win—along with plenty of rewards. Expect ongoing updates as new campaign missions and additional gameplay features are added over time.
Gameplay

Campaign
The single-player campaign leans into realism and introduces moral choices based on tactics. Your actions are evaluated, and you receive a score at the end of each level.
Sometimes you must quickly decide whether an NPC is an immediate threat. For example, you may encounter a civilian woman who appears to be reaching for a weapon—only for the situation to reveal a different outcome. This affects your collateral damage result, tracked through a threat assessment rating from A to F, depending on how many civilians you injure or kill. Players who earn higher ratings receive rewards.

Character dialogue also changes based on what you choose during missions.

Tactical options are front and center, such as:
- Using a sniper rifle in a wide area to approach objectives in a non-linear order.
- Choosing to shoot out lights to reduce visibility and then use night-vision goggles during breaching and clearing.
Multiplayer
Multiplayer was reworked from earlier entries to support a more tactical style of play. Expect more emphasis on map exploration, breaching doors, and the return of a hardcore-style “Realism” mode that removes the HUD.
Along the way, mini-map behavior changed based on player feedback:
- The mini-map was initially replaced with a compass-style marker, including visual indicators to help identify allies and enemies.
- After the multiplayer beta, Infinity Ward brought back the mini-map, but removed the red enemy dots—except when you use the UAV killstreak.
Killstreaks also return, providing rewards tied to kills. More recent Call of Duty games often relied on Scorestreaks (rewards based on score) instead. In Modern Warfare, you can convert Killstreaks into Scorestreaks using the in-game perk “Pointman.”
Online modes support a wider range of players per match than earlier installments. A standout new mode is Ground War, featuring over 100 players. Another fresh mode, Gunfight, matches two teams of two players against each other in short, small-scale rounds lasting 40 seconds each.
Special Ops
Modern Warfare is the first title in the series since 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts to not include a Zombies mode. Instead, it offers the cooperative Special Ops mode previously seen in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
Special Ops shares its story with both the campaign and multiplayer. It includes a “Survival” mode, which was a timed PlayStation 4 release exclusive until October 2020.
At launch, Special Ops includes:
- Four Operations: multi-objective missions set on large open maps that require mandatory 4-player cooperation.
- Classic Special Ops: smaller missions, closer in scale to the original Spec Ops format.

Strategies
Try Every Gun and Find the Ones You Like

Modern Warfare includes a huge variety of weapons. You’ll come across most of them through the campaign and the cooperative Spec Ops mode, with different attachments available along the way—giving you a chance to test them before jumping into competitive play.
As you progress in PvP, you’ll unlock even more guns. It’s tempting to stick with the first option you unlock, but it’s worth experimenting with everything you gain so you can discover what fits your playstyle. Being comfortable with how multiple weapons handle also helps when you need to grab something new mid-fight.
Finally, use your experience to refine your loadout. The goal is to prepare for how the opposing team approaches—and to match what your teammates need in each match.
Let the Campaign Teach You Tactics
The campaign in Modern Warfare is often more personal and controlled than in many previous entries. Some missions are smaller, with fewer enemies, and they focus more on careful movement and tactical planning than on simply pushing through large waves.
These missions are a great place to learn skills you can bring into multiplayer. Your squadmates encourage teamwork—such as clearing rooms together and checking corners. That same mindset helps you avoid ambushes when entering a new area.
Use the campaign to practice dealing with hidden enemies and unfamiliar locations, improving your survival chances when you step into multiplayer.
