Update Highlights

Android 5 Lollipop

PreloadManager improvements

We enhanced our PreloadManager further. It already let you prepare media in memory ahead of time (before playback) and then hand it off smoothly to the player when it’s needed. Even so, you still had to avoid preloading too much and hitting memory limits. With Media3 1.9.0, two updates make preloading simpler and more reliable:

Caching support

Android 5 Lollipop

  • When choosing how far ahead items should be preloaded, you can now use PreloadStatus.specifiedRangeCached(0, 5000) as the target state.
  • This stores the selected range to disk cache instead of loading it into RAM.
  • Because items farther away no longer need to sit in memory, you can preload a much larger range more safely.
  • Note: This requires setting a Cache in DefaultPreloadManager.Builder.

Automatic memory management

  • We updated the LoadControl interface to better handle preloading scenarios.
  • You can now set a specific maximum memory limit for preloaded content held in memory.
  • The default limit is 144 MB, and you can change it via DefaultLoadControl.Builder.
  • When the memory limit is reached, DefaultPreloadManager stops preloading automatically.
  • If needed, it will also release memory used by lower-priority preloaded items.

New simplified default behaviors in ExoPlayer

ExoPlayer also received multiple incremental upgrades. A few notable ones:

  • Mute / unmute methods: Along with the existing setVolume, new convenience methods make it easy to mute and then restore the prior volume without manually tracking it.
  • Android 5 Lollipop

  • Stuck player detection: In rare cases, playback can get stuck in a buffering/playing state with no progress (for example, due to codec issues or configuration problems). The player now reports a StuckPlayerException when it detects this situation.
  • Wake lock enabled by default: Wake lock handling was previously opt-in, which could hide tricky background playback edge cases. Now it’s opt-out, so you don’t need to manage wake locks manually.
  • Simpler CC (subtitles) button logic: To make “turn subtitles on/off” behavior easier, there’s now a boolean option: selectTextByDefault.
  • Android 5 Lollipop

Simplified media button preferences in MediaSession

Previously, customizing which buttons appear in the media notification drawer on Android Auto or WearOS often required custom commands and buttons—even when your goal was just to trigger a standard player action. With Media3 1.9.0, you can set media button preferences using a standard player command, with no custom command handling required.

Final Thoughts

If you’re using a compatible device, you may be able to install Lollipop for free through an update. Developers can also explore its open-source code. Android 5.0 Lollipop ushers in a new era for your device, combining a modern design with performance improvements. By focusing on looks and speed, it greatly enhances everyday phone use. With better battery efficiency and more capable apps, Lollipop makes the overall experience feel better and smoother.
