Oddworld Introduction

Oddworld Oddworld puts you in the Stranger’s shoes as you hunt wanted outlaws, using a first-person crossbow, traps, and smart tactics. Capture alive for bigger rewards, battle with health and stamina, and enjoy gamepad customization.

Oddworld

Oddworld is a popular action-adventure where you step into the role of a bounty hunter. Arm yourself with a double-barreled crossbow and a collection of unusual weapons, then roam through a huge world packed with danger. Along the way, you’ll meet a wide mix of characters and outlaw enemies. Use tactics, traps, and smart positioning to take them down and claim valuable rewards.

The game also supports multiple gamepad models, letting you fine-tune your controls. You can adjust button layout, change the virtual button position and size, and set button sensitivity for a more comfortable playstyle.

Gameplay Overview

Oddworld

Your main mission centers on the player character known as the Stranger. He must capture wanted outlaws—alive or dead. Combat and movement use both third-person and first-person views:

  • Third-person: best for long-distance travel, platform jumps, rope climbing, and melee fights.
  • First-person: used for aiming and firing ranged weapons.

You can confront enemies directly, or stay out of their line of sight. When you hide, the game shows it on-screen, and you can lure foes toward you (or pull them away). Once you’re close enough, enemies can be killed or stunned. Capturing live targets is worth more than taking them down.

Important limitation: during an attempted capture, the Stranger can’t perform other actions—so you’re left vulnerable.

Status Bars

  • Health: drops when you take damage. If it reaches zero, the Stranger dies.
  • Stamina: decreases when you perform actions like melee attacks or when you fall from high places. Stamina slowly refills over time.

Use stamina carefully: it can help you recover from health damage by briefly “shaking off” the impact, but relying on this means you’ll burn stamina faster.

Crossbow & Live Ammo System

A signature part of Oddworld is the Stranger’s crossbow, fired from a first-person perspective. Instead of traditional bullets, it fires live ammunition—small fictional creatures that act as projectiles and deliver different effects.

You can get live ammo by purchasing it from the game’s vendors or by finding it around the world.

At any time, you can load two different ammo types into the crossbow:

  • Stunks — gas grenades
  • Thudslugs — cannonballs
  • Boombats — rockets
  • Stingbees — small shots

The game also includes role-playing style progression through rewards you spend on upgrades—such as crossbow improvements, ammo and storage, armor, and other gear like binoculars and knuckle dusters.

Key Features

Unique Live Ammo System

Combat becomes more than simple shooting. You can launch different critters as ammunition to change how every fight plays out. For example:

  • Use Chippunks to draw enemies’ attention.
  • Use Bolamite webbing to trap opponents.
  • Use Stingbees and explosive bats for heavy damage.

This mechanic adds planning and variety to each encounter.

Story-Driven Adventure

The narrative reveals the Stranger’s hidden illness and what drives him. Talk with quirky townsfolk to uncover important leads on bounties, and expect the story to react to your missions and decisions—shaping both the Stranger’s outcome and the world around him.

First/Third Person Flexibility

Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD lets you switch between first and third person during play. This dual approach supports both immersive interaction and tactical positioning during fights. Choose the perspective that best matches your preferred style.

Multiple Difficulty Options

Pick from three difficulty modes designed for different skill levels. Casual players and experienced veterans can both find a challenge that fits. Changing difficulty can also make replays feel fresh.

Achievements & Unlockables

There are 35 achievements to earn. Explore thoroughly to find hidden Easter eggs and complete side missions—each discovery can reward your effort and encourage more adventurous play.

Helpful Tips

  • After you finish a bounty, stop by the General Store—that’s usually when new stock arrives.
  • Oddworld

  • Before tracking a target, buy and restock ammo. If you don’t, you may be forced to use whatever critters you can pick up on the way.
  • Oddworld

  • Outlaws are unpredictable and don’t trust anyone. They often stash valuables in crates and barrels, so break them open whenever you can.
  • Dead outlaws tend to fall apart quickly in desert areas. If you want the bounty money from dead targets, grab them fast.
  • Oddworld

  • Retreat is allowed. If you’re getting overwhelmed, switch to third-person and run. Your third-person escape is up to 3 times faster than your first-person movement, giving you a better chance to reposition. Sometimes the smartest move is slipping out of the area and heading back the way you came—letting you cover more ground between locations.
  • If you’re peeking around corners, remember that your third-person camera can make it easier to check what’s nearby.
