Xenowerk
Xenowerk is an engaging action-adventure exploration game set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by mutants. You step into the shoes of a tough, elite operative, pushing into mutant strongholds and carrying out demanding extermination missions. The game’s standout is its vivid, animated 3D visuals. You can roam freely across varied environments, using advanced weapons and gear to fight mutants with different abilities. Levels ramp up in challenge over time, and you’ll earn plenty of unlockable rewards—delivering an exciting sci‑fi combat experience.
Attractive Gameplay
In Xenowerk, you play as an agent tasked with infiltrating some of the galaxy’s most dangerous mutant lairs. Your mission is simple to state but hard to carry out: stop the mutant plague from destroying the universe.
The game includes 70+ levels. Early on, you may only deal with three or four mutants at a time, but as you progress, the threats diversify and the encounters become more intense.
Controls
- Left thumb: move your character
- Right thumb: aim and fire
- Bottom button: switch weapons
You can carry two weapons at once—often a machine gun and a shotgun—though you’re free to equip other combinations.
Wonderful Features
Immersive, oppressive atmosphere
Darkness feels suffocating, swallowing the light like heavy curtains. Strange whispers and eerie effects add tension throughout. Even when you shine a flashlight beam, the gloom still lingers, heightening that sense of isolation and fear.
Strategic flashlight mechanics
Your flashlight isn’t just for seeing. It also works as a combat tool, but it comes with a warning: using it can draw monsters’ attention. Time it wisely and don’t rely on it blindly.

Distinct setting
If you’re tired of space battles and modern city streets, Xenowerk changes the scenery. Instead of familiar environments, you’ll find yourself in a mysterious laboratory, giving the game a fresh identity and a unique flavor.
Customization and progression
You can personalize both your character and your weapons. As you progress, the build you choose helps you feel like you’re shaping a truly personal agent.
Exploration and item collection
By searching hidden corners of the lab, you can uncover useful resources—like ammunition, medicine, and new weapons—and you may even discover shortcuts that help you escape faster.
Why replaying matters
Replaying earlier levels is encouraged. Each run can bring different weapons or new combat approaches, making it easier to overcome tough sections and refine how you play.

“This is a fantastic twin-stick, top-down shooter. I bought it a few years ago and came back to play again. The early levels are fairly manageable, then the difficulty ramps up gradually. Armor and weapon upgrades become important as you continue. I play it using a Bluetooth controller, and I actually preferred that over touchscreen controls. So far I’ve made it through with only what you start with, and I’m already at the military base. Eventually, you’ll need better weapons and armor using in-game currency earned at the end of each mission. The controls feel smooth and easy to learn, and there’s a good selection of guns and armor to buy—better versions show up as time goes on. There are lots of different enemies and hazards, and plenty of missions to take them on. Overall, it’s my favorite top-down game I’ve played. Thanks, Pixelbite!”
“First, the bad: camera movement can feel a bit unintuitive, and the progression system sometimes forces you to abandon weapons you like because they aren’t strong enough anymore (RIP Plasma Archer). Now the good: controls are excellent, pacing is great, and the music and sound effects are delightful. The difficulty curve feels just right. If you ever make another one (please do), I’d love to see PvE multiplayer—that would be awesome.”
Final Verdict
Xenowerk delivers an excellent action experience with a retro-style feel—something increasingly rare on smartphones. It also features impressive graphics, including a strong real-time lighting system and terrifying mutated creatures.
