Gameplay Overview

Evony takes place in a persistent medieval world. You play as the lord or lady responsible for a city—and potentially an alliance as well.

Beginner protection for new players

When you’re new, you receive beginner’s protection. During this period, other players can’t attack your cities for seven days or until you upgrade your town hall to level 5 or higher. Use this window to gather resources, grow your troop supply, and get comfortable with the game before PvP pressure begins.

Taxes, production, and construction

As your ruler, you set key parameters such as:

Evony

  • Tax rate
  • Production (resource generation priorities)
  • Construction (city upgrades and new buildings)

Resources include gold, food, lumber, stone, iron, plus your city’s idle population. Like many strategy titles, you typically begin by growing population and improving hourly resource output. After that, you expand through resource fields and start assembling your army.

Your forces can include siege machines such as ballistas, catapults, and battering rams, alongside infantry like archers, warriors, and swordsmen.

Acquiring items

Certain items are obtained using gems. Gems can be purchased through the in-game shop using real money or earned via the in-game wheel. Some of these items can speed up your progress. Capturing resources and settlements during conflicts is also a main route for gaining cities and valuable materials.

Player-versus-player focus

Evony

The game includes player-versus-player gameplay, and it’s designed so that survival is extremely difficult if you haven’t formed or joined an alliance.

Controlling up to ten cities

Evony lets you manage up to ten cities by earning titles. To gain a title, you must reach the required rank. Both titles and ranks rely on Medals, which you obtain by using in-game coins to buy medal boxes, by attacking valleys, or by winning medal boxes through the wheel.

Two money systems

Evony uses two economic systems:

  • Gold (in-game economy): earned through quests, taxing your population, or attacking NPC targets. You can also sell resources for gold on the marketplace, and trade resources with alliance members for gold.
  • Evony

  • Premium currency (real money): you can purchase real-world currency to obtain game cents, which are then used to buy items and resources from the in-game shop.

Key Features

Choose from seven civilizations

Select one of seven civilizations: American, Chinese, European, Russian, Korean, Arabian, and Japanese. Your choice changes your city’s architecture and affects how you plan both growth and combat. Picking early helps you align your strategy with the strengths of your chosen civilization, and as you progress, that identity continues to influence your empire’s style and performance.

Build, research, and govern

Manage resources, run research, and upgrade buildings to expand your city. Early on, the game provides development tasks to guide you, and later it unlocks more options as your progress continues. Your order of upgrades and research matters because it impacts troop power and overall efficiency.

Real-time battles and alliance teamwork

Fights occur on a shared world map, so scouting and timing are crucial. You train different troop types, including siege units, and then deploy them against threats nearby or far away. When battles grow larger, coordinating with allies becomes important for organizing rallies and defenses—helping you maintain clear plans and steady communication before major operations.

Legendary Generals power your army

Evony includes well-known historical Generals such as Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, King Arthur, Julius Caesar, Genghis Khan, Oda Nobunaga, and Yi Sun-sin. You can recruit, level up, and equip them to strengthen specific troop roles. In battles, you may even capture enemy generals—adding pressure to protect your own leaders while seeking advantages. Over time, your general lineup becomes a core part of your military identity.

Helpful Tips

Evony

Target the right bosses (and consider Double Drop Generals)

If you want to grow quickly in Evony, boss hunting is a must. However, not every boss provides the same value.

For resource farming, focus on event bosses such as Golems, Witches, Warlords, and especially Ymir. Ymir spawns on Thursdays and Fridays and is known for offering some of the best resource drops in the game.

Regular bosses below B11 won’t provide resources, so don’t spend your stamina there.

When it comes to speed-ups, your approach should also match the event schedule and your current upgrade needs.
