Chess Universe Tips & Strategies

Start with pawn moves (then build)

In the opening, begin by looking at pawn moves—then consider knight, followed by bishop, then rook (or castling), and finally the queen.

That order makes sense because pawns shape your pawn structure and take space away from your opponent’s pawns and pieces. Controlling the center with pawns is a strong foundation.

Chess Universe

Knights can often be developed quickly and start influencing the center. Bishops also need development to control key diagonals before castling. Rooks typically come next, alongside castling, and the queen is usually developed later since it’s powerful—and can be targeted if you bring it out too early.

Chess Universe

Keep in mind: every pawn move affects the board and informs your broader plan. Use your pawns as the base of your position, support them while developing your pieces, and work toward a strong middle game.

Don’t move the same piece twice (without a reason)

During the opening, try not to move the same piece more than once unless you have a clear purpose—like winning material. Repeating moves often wastes tempo and slows your ability to develop your other pieces. It also helps you avoid common opening traps.

Instead, focus on coordinated development. When your pieces work together, you gain board control and build toward stronger future strategy. Every piece has a job—give them chances to contribute, and stay alert for better setups.

Don’t get greedy with pawn sacrifices

Be careful about accepting pawn sacrifices in the opening, especially when you’re playing Black. You might win a pawn or two, but your pieces may be underdeveloped—and that can lead to quick checkmates.

Chess Universe

The main goal of the opening is to develop pieces quickly and efficiently. Don’t spend too long debating pawn details—use that time for solid development and central control. Also, don’t focus only on material gains; prioritize piece activity, piece safety, and overall position.

Better development usually leads to an easier, stronger game in the middle game.
