Heart of the Forest

Heart of the Forest is a horror adventure game inspired by folklore. Step into a suffocating, shadow-filled forest where corrupted spirits roam and hunt with purpose. As something old stirs in the dark, you’ll be forced to confront what scares you most—then decide how to survive.

The story unfolds through multiple perspectives and multiple playable characters. Each character experiences different events on the way out, and your choices determine what happens to them—and ultimately shape the team’s final outcome.

Key Features

Echoes of the Past

With laughter drifting through the trees, the group tries to enjoy the exploration—while the fears beneath the surface quietly grow. Mia struggles against the expectations of a controlling family, desperately trying to define who she truly is. Alex looks lively, but is haunted by a tragic accident he can’t fully escape. Sarah is constantly pressured by the fear of failure and the weight of her studies. Jim, a grounded skeptic, insists on logic and wants to debunk the forest’s rumors.

As night arrives, they set up camp in a clearing that feels strangely silent. Shadows lengthen and twist as darkness closes in, and that uneasy calm is when the supernatural first begins to show. Whispers ride the wind, teasing the group with cryptic hints about tormented spirits hidden somewhere in the forest. They dismiss it—at least at first—telling themselves it’s imagination running wild.

A Race Against Time

Heart of the Forest

Once the spirit’s presence tightens around the group, the fears they tried to ignore come roaring back. The darkness seems to multiply their stress, and panic starts to cloud their decisions. Venturing deeper, they discover the remains of an ancient ritual area, implying that the spirit draws power from the suffering of those who enter its woods.

They reach an unavoidable truth: escaping the spirit isn’t only about running—it’s also about confronting the darker sides of themselves that the forest brings to life. As fragile alliances form again, they plan to face the threat directly. They must acknowledge the shadows haunting them to weaken the control the forest holds over them.

With twisted paths everywhere, the forest becomes a test of endurance as they fight against the tide of despair.

The Chilling Influence of the Spirit

Around the campfire, the group trades stories about local legends. One tale stands out: The Phantom of the Black Forest—a vengeful spirit said to trap lost souls and lead them to certain doom. The legend sparks a mix of fear and curiosity, and the group soon realizes they may have already been noticed.

Over the next days, the forest’s confusing trails and deeper exploration slowly undo their unity. Alex becomes increasingly unstable, haunted by visions that make him doubt his own mind. Mia’s internal conflict spirals into poor decisions, pushing her to wander into the woods alone in search of relief. Sarah, burdened by insecurity, begins sabotaging the group’s efforts—afraid that success might cost her friends their trust. Meanwhile, Jim tries to maintain a sense of reason, but the growing irrationality around him keeps pulling him into conflict.

Player Comments

“A really impressive debut!” It’s clear the team worked with a limited budget, but they made it count. The visuals feel highly polished, and the music and sound design are especially strong. Overall, the production quality seems well above the typical indie film average.

“Writing-wise, it doesn’t feel totally new,” but it stays engaging (more or less) throughout. Some decisions made by both protagonists and antagonists don’t fully make sense, and at times the reviewer wished the game allowed more control over certain choices.

Player choices are spaced out reasonably, though some routes appear to be automatically selected based on earlier decisions—so in a way, those also function like choice outcomes.

“I loved the setting and atmosphere.” The reviewer appreciated how the developers leaned into local flavor and folklore by placing the story in the Black Forest. They also felt the game could have used it even more—for example, letting German speakers speak German among themselves while providing subtitles. They noted it felt odd when the dialogue defaults to English even when no non-German speakers are present.

“Overall, it’s great entertainment…”
