- Since it’s based on an older game format, some modern players may find the graphics or gameplay feel dated compared to newer releases.

Excellent Performance of GoldenEye 007
GoldenEye 007 is a first-person shooter developed by Rare and published by Nintendo, originally released in 1997 for the Nintendo 64. It adapts the 1995 James Bond film GoldenEye, putting you in the role of Agent James Bond as you stop a criminal organization from deploying satellite weapons.
Across multiple levels, you’ll complete objectives such as retrieving or destroying targets while taking out enemies along the way. In multiplayer, up to four players can participate in different deathmatch modes using split-screen.
Development details: Work began in January 1995. A comparatively inexperienced team led by Martin Hollis spent two and a half years creating GoldenEye 007. The project started as a side-scrolling platformer concept for the SNES, but later evolved into a 3D shooter for the Nintendo 64—drawing inspiration from Doom (1993) and Virtua Cop (1994). Rare Studios also visited the GoldenEye set for reference, and Eon Productions and MGM allowed additional scenes not included in the film.
Wonderful Highlights of GoldenEye 007
GoldenEye 007 launched in August 1997, nearly two years after the film’s release and shortly before the sequel Tomorrow Never Dies. During development, game media expectations were reportedly low. Despite that, the game earned unanimous critical praise, sold over 8 million copies, and became the third best-selling title on the Nintendo 64.
It was praised for its graphics, depth and variety in gameplay, and its multiplayer mode. In 1998, it won the BAFTA Award for Interactive Entertainment Game and received four awards from the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences.
The game also proved that home consoles could strongly support the first-person shooter genre, shifting the style away from purely Doom-like approaches toward something more realistic. It introduced several innovations, including atmospheric single-player missions.
