Story

Under Your Spell is an immersive, text-based magic school and dating simulator. It takes inspiration from fan-favorite titles such as True Love 95 and Persona 4. As the main character, you’ll balance the everyday challenges of attending school with the twists and turns of romance—while also preparing for the much-anticipated event called “Cup of Cathal”.

Step into Tír na nÓg, Ireland’s most prestigious school of magic. For five years, you’ve walked the halls without ever becoming a standout academically or athletically—and you still haven’t found “that one person.” Everything changes when your childhood friend Eric proposes a bold plan: use an ancient spell to attract the girlfriends you’ve always dreamed of.

But be careful—old magic is powerful, yet unpredictable. Even if the spell brings you a girlfriend, there’s a condition: you must hold up your end of the bargain. With the spell quietly shaping this year’s school events, the timing is on your side—if you’re willing to act.

Developer Notes

In last week’s devblog, the developer shared excitement about writing the introduction to the second Trial. It was a small but important piece—something that helped move the story forward into the more substantial portion of that Trial.

Then the idea came up to add a personal touch: having the girls show up to offer the player a short pep talk before the Trial begins. That change required reworking the Trial intro, because at this stage the player should already have at least one or two girls close enough that they’d plausibly want to visit the main character before the big event.

With that decision made, a new question followed: which girl should visit? Bringing every eligible girl at once wasn’t practical—visually it would be odd and it would also bloat the intro length, even if each visit is brief.

The developer considered multiple approaches. Picking a random girl from the available pool was tempting, but it could disappoint players who had progressed a specific girl’s storyline further. Another idea—always choosing the girl with the highest storyline progress—also had flaws, since relationship pacing doesn’t move at the same speed for everyone. Even when the event counts match, some characters may not respond with affection (the developer jokingly references Aisling), and some routes don’t advance in a straight line—for example, Gwen gets upset after her fifth event.

After weighing options, the final solution was to add an extra internal value that represents a girl’s likelihood to visit before the Trial. Using that metric, the visitor is chosen in a way that better fits what the player has experienced so far.

After that, the team still needed to adjust the Trial intro to include the visit scenes, then write the visits themselves (which were started and completed in parts). Next, the developer plans to finish the remaining visit content and proceed into the Trial proper. There’s also mention of continuing work on Violet’s sixth story, since supporters selected her as the current focus.
