Story

Perched high above the Sword Coast, Candlekeep stands as a fortress of the old dynasty—majestic, isolated, and built to keep dangerous outside plots at bay. Though it’s remote and full of hazardous rocks, it’s also where you call home.

You were raised and educated by the sage Gorion. Nearly two decades of your life were spent within Candlekeep, a place thick with sacred knowledge. Gorion taught you lessons there and filled your days with tales of heroes and monsters, warriors and love, triumphs and tragedy. Yet one thing never stops nagging at you: who you truly are. Gorion never gives a clear answer, believing your past isn’t something you need to worry about.

Then, without warning, Gorion grows distant. Even when you care and ask questions, he doesn’t return the way he used to. Gradually, the distance between you increases—until today, when Gorion suddenly seems tense and distressed. He hands you gold and equipment and orders you to leave at once, telling you to go into the world and “find something.” Everything happens too fast. What will you do next out in the open? What is Gorion hiding? And what is your real identity? This journey will likely force the truth into the light.

Early in Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition, you’ll need to learn the ropes quickly. Talk to NPCs and explore for information around the area. Your choices matter: selecting different answers can lead NPCs to respond with different situations or tasks. Sometimes an NPC won’t engage if you say something they don’t like—but you can always try again, so don’t assume you’re locked out forever.

Helpful Tips

• Use TAB to highlight objects and elements you can open or interact with. Many players miss this at first, but it makes exploring far easier.
• On character pages, make sure AI scripts are enabled. AI won’t be perfect, but having NPCs do “something” is usually better than leaving them idle.
• Enemies scale with your power. If you’re struggling to land hits, you may need magic weapons (for example, +1, +2, etc.). Also, be mindful of protected enemies—you may need to adjust your equipment, and sometimes the game will make certain options less effective.
• Don’t rush to sell everything. You generally don’t need the money, and keeping options can help later.
• Shop discounts depend on your leader’s charisma. Choose your party leader before spending, so you get the best pricing.
• You rarely need to buy much unless you’re following a very specific build—powerful items tend to show up often, and you’ll usually be well supplied.
• Many encounters require ways to handle fire or acid damage. If you aren’t traveling with enough mages, prioritize weapons that can cover these damage types.
• Certain enemies may demand spell support such as Breach, Pierce Magic, or Pierce Shield. A strong tactic is to open combat, apply debuffs to the enemy mage (or dragon), and remove the threat early—otherwise, once buffs go up, the fight can quickly spiral downward. A rogue with a well-timed sneak attack can also swing outcomes.
