Developer Notes

Hello everyone! Happy 247th Marine Corps birthday. You might be surprised to see a DevLog for this game after such a long gap, but I thought it was a good time to look back at All in Love and War and share how I feel about it now—especially after working on three other projects.

Please note: the following contains spoilers for the entire game. Consider yourself warned.

How the Visual Novel Idea Started

All in Love and War

I’ve mentioned VN creation in earlier DevLogs, but it’s been long enough that I’ll summarize again. At first, I wanted to build a dating sim—something that later became Barachoda Bloom. However, a friend pointed out that the scope was too large, and I should start with a smaller project.

With Barajam 2021 coming up, I came up with the idea for a linear visual novel focused on a character from BB and their love interest. I really wanted to write about a “silver daddy” and give him a tragic ending. I was also inspired by Gengoroh Tagame’s manga about two soldiers during the Russo-Japanese war. I especially liked the look of the older soldier and wanted to build a character around that design.

I also aimed for an 80s anime art style. After watching Super Dimension Fortress Macross, I felt like this VN should carry the vibe of the TV series, while BB follows the style of Ai Oboete Imasu Ka? (That’s how I like to think of it.)

One odd detail: I ended up basing parts of the VN on Macross because I thought one of the love interests had died—based on a Google suggestion. In reality, she never does (at least not directly), aside from it being implied by materials set after the series ended.

Notes on the Writing Process

This was my first major creative writing project. Before this, I didn’t have much experience writing stories. I spent time around people who study creative writing, read a lot of articles about how to craft a strong story, and did some basic prose work—but I hadn’t written a complete story before.

The plot was structured using the Save the Cat beat sheet. If you’re not familiar with it, the beat sheet was first explained by Blake Snyder in Save the Cat! The Last Book on Screenwriting You’ll Ever Need. Snyder describes the beat sheet as a framework that many well-known, successful movies use to generate an emotional and memorable reaction from viewers. In essence, it modernizes the three-act structure for today’s writers.

There are also sequels and spin-offs to the original book by the author and other writers. Some people criticize this approach for making movies feel “same-y,” but I still found it useful—especially as a starting point for someone like me.

To understand the beat sheet better, I read Save the Cat! Writes a Novel: The Last Book On Novel Writing You’ll Ever Need by Jessica Brody (try saying that three times fast…). In that book, the author discusses several “genres” based on plot mechanics—not the usual categories like romance, horror, or slice of life. One of the listed genres is called Buddy Love, which focuses on the growth and connection between two key characters, and how both change over the course of the story…
