Open World Environment
GTA: Liberty City Stories stands out for its large, wide-ranging map. You can explore freely and make meaningful choices with minimal interference. Because it’s non-linear, many outcomes are shaped by how you decide to play.
As you spend time in the city, the world feels strikingly authentic—details, action, characters, and environments are crafted to feel like a living, brand-new place.
A Sense of Freedom and Exploration
- Roam without limits: the city is big enough to keep pulling you forward.
- Choose your activities: move to any area and complete missions whenever you want.
Third-Person Perspective
One of the standout elements of Liberty City Stories is its third-person viewpoint. You control your character directly and can watch your actions and how you interact with the surroundings.
This perspective is especially useful in combat, since it lets you clearly see what’s happening around you. You can also enjoy open driving and take in the view across different city districts.
Character Control Details
- Precise movement: your protagonist’s actions are responsive, supporting both exploration and fights.
- Camera angles: move the camera to whatever position you need for better awareness.
Customizable Protagonist
If you want your character to stand out, head to the General Store. You can buy items such as clothing and accessories, helping shape your look and personal style. The money you earn from missions is yours to use freely—and you can earn it back quickly.
Your earnings depend on how well you perform in missions. While making money, you’ll also learn more about the protagonist’s background.
Change Your Appearance
- Switch between different outfits
- Add period-appropriate accessories
- Decorate your character with tattoos
Protagonist Strength Progression
As you play, you’ll quickly realize that relying on fists alone won’t get you far enough.
Fantastic Gameplay

- Equipment system: the main character can equip items, but the game doesn’t use attribute/skill-style stats for them.
- Multiple roles: Tony can take on different ways of play, such as an ambulance rescuer, a police officer, or a taxi driver.
Vehicles and How They Work
You’ll collect many types of vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, planes, and ships. Vehicles don’t have tiers and can’t be upgraded. Each vehicle has its own durability, collision size, and passenger capacity.
When your character is inside a vehicle, the vehicle is what absorbs attacks.

Two Control Interfaces
The game uses two main control modes:
- Standard interface: you can walk, enter missions, and attack freely.
- Driving interface: you control vehicles like cars, motorcycles, planes, and ships, and you can shoot in both directions.
In normal situations, you can’t enter missions while driving.

Dynamic Weather in Villefranche
Weather changes frequently. Fog, daytime, nighttime, rain, thunder, and lightning are common and can vary from day to day. Weather does not affect character activities or the storyline.
Mission-Based Combat
The combat system is structured around missions. You can fight during missions or without them. Everyone uses the same health bar.
When your weapon bullets hit an enemy, they deal damage. Combat missions work like this:
- Start: activating the combat mission begins the fight.
- End: attacking the target enemy or completing the mission objective ends the battle.
The game also includes lock-on mode, supporting a more precise approach to combat, including aiming, shooting, and weapon use.
Awesome Features (Vehicle Combat)
Vehicle combat is a core part of the series. You can enter vehicles normally, with the protagonist seated inside. In this mode, attacks are handled by the vehicle.
- Impact on enemies: vehicles can push or move enemies.
- No ground crushing: vehicles can’t move enemies by squeezing the ground.
- Ranged fire: while inside a vehicle, you can freely shoot in both directions.
- No close combat: you can’t fight in melee while in a vehicle.
Most vehicles don’t come with weapons, except for certain specialized options equipped with heavy machine guns and missiles. Some system-specific vehicles may use other weapons, while vehicle combat commonly uses submachine guns and similar ranged setups.
