Review

After finishing Watch Dogs 1, I jumped straight into Watch Dogs 2, so I’m sharing a full review and how it stacks up against its predecessor.

This review is based on a player who completed both main and side missions.

The story and character motivations feel clearer, and it’s easier to understand what the enemies actually stand to gain from the protagonist’s mistakes. I also really enjoyed being able to control drones and mini-cars for hacking. Another standout for me was the option to set up other people—for example, making gang members attack specific NPCs or choosing which NPCs the police arrest. Those kinds of options aren’t in the earlier game.

That said, I didn’t care for the profile mode in Watch Dogs 2, and I preferred the approach used in Watch Dogs 1. I also disliked how you sometimes have to visit specific car dealerships to get specific vehicles, and I wasn’t happy that you can only carry three weapons—with one weapon locked, meaning you can’t freely swap everything.

In Watch Dogs 1, I could bring all weapons and tailor my loadout based on the mission—whether I wanted stealth or direct confrontation. In Watch Dogs 2, I’m limited to three weapons, and if I want to change them, I have to return to the hideout. There’s also a 30-second lockout between leaving the hideout and re-entering the open world, and because there aren’t gun shops to refill ammo or swap weapons, I end up returning to the hideout constantly.

On top of that, the number of silenced weapons feels extremely small. I preferred the variety from Watch Dogs 1.

Another issue: unlocking new skills requires skill points, which you earn by recruiting followers or leveling up. But once you reach a certain level, you can’t earn any more skill points—now the only option is hunting for hidden locations scattered around the map. Having to run around to locate a single skill point is frustrating. I also disliked certain skills, like “Darkness Descends”, because it barely holds up against enemies.

Finally, there’s the money system for hacking accounts. In Watch Dogs 1, you could earn up to 10,000, but in Watch Dogs 2 the maximum is only 500, which felt unfairly low.

Overall, I liked the game, but I would have enjoyed it even more if some of the gameplay mechanics from WD1 had been carried over into WD2.
