Azur Lane Introduction

Azur Lane Azur Lane is a side-scrolling action RPG where you summon WWII-inspired ship girls, build fleets, manage oil, and fight story, collab, and event stages while unlocking skins and bonds.

Azur Lane

Azur Lane is a popular side-scrolling action shooter where you recruit ship girls—warship “personifications”—by using Wisdom Cubes. Build your fleet by selecting three ship girls for the front line and three for the back line to take on story stages, collaboration stages, and character event stages. As you clear content, you’ll earn plenty of resources to strengthen your ship girls.

Equip each ship girl with appropriate weapons, then upgrade their skills as you progress. Leveling not only increases their power (EXP and level-ups), but also helps you develop strong in-game bonds. When a ship girl reaches Level 100, you can use wedding rings to form a vow relationship.

In every battle, keep an eye on oil. Each ship girl consumes a different amount, and running out of oil ends the battle.

Some ship girls also feature attractive Live2D (L2D) skins. Change their skin and set them as your secretary to unlock real-time interactions and additional secret animation moments.

The game continues to add new ship girls, skins, characters, and collaboration events—so there’s always something new to chase.

Gameplay Overview

Azur Lane

Azur Lane is a side-scrolling shoot ’em up combined with simulation and role-playing elements. You recruit moe anthropomorphic interpretations of World War II warships, commonly from the United States Navy, Royal Navy, Imperial Japanese Navy, and Kriegsmarine (with additional fleets added later from many other navies). There’s also a separate faction for Age of Sail ships called Tempesta.

You organize ship girls into fleets of six and fight AI-controlled enemies or other players’ fleets. Characters earn EXP through multiple activities—such as battles, completing commissions, and placing ships in Dormitories. After collecting enough EXP, they level up, though each ship has a maximum level cap that can be expanded via Limit Break.

Most characters also have upgradable abilities that can be triggered during combat.

Starter Ships

Azur Lane

At the start, you can choose from characters such as:

  • American destroyer USS Laffey (DD-459)
  • British destroyer HMS Javelin
  • German destroyer Z23 (Chinese/English release) or Japanese destroyer Ayanami (Japanese/Korean release)

In-game, these starters are treated as protagonists.

Content Volume

As of October 2024, the game has introduced 600+ characters representing ships from nine countries that took part in the war. It also includes preserved museum ships like Japanese Mikasa and Russian Aurora.

Strategy Tips

Spend Cubes Wisely (Unzen/Rainbow & Collab Wins)

  • Use cubes for Unzen/Rainbow ships and “collab” ships.
  • Regular draws are often less efficient because event/collab pools pull from special, heavy, or light categories depending on the banner—so saving cubes helps.
  • New UR/Rainbow ships tend to stay useful for longer, making targeted pulls more valuable.

Know the Chapter Pace

  • Play through chapter 6. A lot of what you need will be shown there.
  • In general, the game guides you, and the necessary steps become clearer as you progress.

Relationships: Oath Skins and Bonuses

  • Relationships are mainly for obtaining oath skins and power bonuses.
  • At Level 100, the boost is around 6% (max affinity).
  • If you use the ship too often in fights or focus too heavily on one relationship, affinity can drop.
  • The game may warn you if you’re about to lose affinity (wording like: “you will lose affinity”).
