Gin Rummy Gameplay
Gin Rummy is played using a standard 52-card deck. Jokers (wild cards) are not used. For smoother dealing, it’s recommended to use two decks: one deck can be used for dealing while the other is kept ready to be shuffled by the opponent.
Card Ranking
Card order (highest to lowest):
- King (K)
- Queen (Q)
- Jack (J)
- Ten
- Nine
- Eight
- Seven
- Six
- Five
- Four
- Three
- Deuce (2)
- Ace (A)
Card values: face cards (J, Q, K) are worth 10 points, while the rest are worth the number shown on the card’s pip.
Goal of the Game
Each player tries to arrange cards in their hand into combinations of three or more cards to reach over 100 points first (the game is played across several hands).
The Deal
- The deck is placed on the table, and each player draws a card.
- The player who draws the highest card selects seating and deals 10 cards to each player, one card at a time.
- The remaining deck stays in the center of the table.
- The top card of the stock deck is flipped face-up next to it to start the discard pile.
- In later rounds, the winner of the previous game becomes the dealer.

How Turns Work
The player who did not deal goes first. On their turn, they may:
- Pick up the face-up card from the discard pile, with the rule that they must then discard one card.
- If they don’t want that card, they can pass without discarding.
- After that, the opponent may choose the same face-up card from the discard pile and discard another card—or pass again.
- Once those options are handled, the first player can take the top card from the stock deck, then discard a card.
Afterward, play continues in turns. On each turn, a player may draw the top card from either the stock or the discard pile, then discard a card. The discarded card cannot be the same card they just picked up from the discard pile.
Forming Sets and Runs
Players work with their 10-card hand to build combinations that follow these minimum requirements:
- Three or more cards of the same rank, or
- Runs of cards with the same suit.
Aces and restrictions: an Ace can be combined with a Deuce (2), but cannot be combined with a King (K).
Knocking, Folding, and Declaring Gin
A player may fold (this is the Knock) when their hand contains only unmatched cards totaling no more than 10 points.
- When a player discards their last card, they reveal all cards and announce the total number of points left uncombined (no combining is counted for this announcement).
- Knocking is optional. A player may continue the game to try to improve their hand.
- The best outcome is making Gin, achieved by arranging all 10 cards into the required combinations.
Whether someone knocks or folds to reveal their cards, the opponent also reveals theirs. This gives both sides a chance to use the opponent’s exposed uncombined cards to form additional combinations where possible.
Who Wins a Hand
- If a player declares Gin, they win the partial game.
- If a player Knocks, then either the Knocker or the opponent can win the partial game.
Win rules based on unmatched card points:
- The Knocker wins if their unmatched-card value is less than the opponent’s.
- The opponent wins if their unmatched-card value is equal to or less than the Knocker’s.
Scoring
A full game ends after enough partial games are played for someone to reach 100 or more points.

- Gin: the Gin player scores 20 points plus the value of the opponent’s unmatched cards.
- Knock win: if the Knocker wins, they score the difference between their unmatched-card value and the opponent’s.
- Opponent win after Knock: if the opponent wins, they score 10 points plus the difference between the two players’ unmatched-card values.
- No difference case: if the unmatched values are the same, the bonus is 10 points.
After the game finishes, players also record bonuses:
- 100 points for winning the overall game.
- 20 points for each partial game won.
- 100 points for winning all rounds of a game without the opponent winning any.
