Need For Speed Payback Introduction

Need For Speed Payback Need For Speed Payback is an open-world racing game for Android where you pick one of three characters and tackle heists, chases, and high-speed events across Fortune Valley.

Need for Speed Payback

Need for Speed Payback is a fast-paced racing game that lets you pick from three playable characters, each tied to their own story arc. Your job is to plan daring heists, come out on top in high-speed chases, and keep building your wealth until you’re sitting on a serious bankroll.

You can also roam freely across a huge open world. Use your driving skills to outsmart rivals, earn respect as you explore, and prove yourself in a variety of races. The game includes a large lineup of vehicles, and each one differs in speed, drifting behavior, and overall performance—so choose wisely based on both your preferences and the track you’re facing.

Gameplay Overview

Need for Speed Payback is set in the open-world location of Fortune Valley, a fictional take on Las Vegas, Nevada. The focus is on action driving, with three characters collaborating to deliver movie-style set pieces as you race, chase, and cause trouble.

Core Modes and World Events

  • Offline single-player mode is available.
  • A 24-hour day/night cycle runs through the world.
  • Fortune Valley is packed with activities such as:
    • Speed traps
    • Need For Speed Payback

    • Speed zones
    • Long jumps
    • Billboard smashes
    • Drift zones
    • Need For Speed Payback

  • You can collect casino chips scattered across the map.

Event Types and Rewards

Events include multiple racing styles, each tied to a specific character:

  • Street races and drag races are handled by Tyler.
  • Off-road races and drift events are handled by Mac.
  • Runner work is handled by Jess.

Completing these activities pays out bank and REP. Before you begin, you may receive side bets—accepting them gives you extra bank, but you must fulfill the added conditions to claim the reward.

Police System (How Pursuits Work)

Unlike earlier entries that leaned heavily on police chases, Payback does not build “heat” after finishing events. Police cars also do not roam the map looking for you. Instead, pursuits are triggered by scripted moments during the campaign, plus pursuit boxes located around Fortune Valley.

In one earlier system, Rav could contact you about abandoned cars found around the map during a limited window. Returning to a safehouse with the car allowed you to keep it. That mechanic also made the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor playable—marking the first time since Need for Speed Rivals that a police vehicle could be driven. These abandoned-car rotation events ended shortly before Need for Speed Heat released.

Garage, Vehicle Build, and Upgrades

Your garage is split by racing discipline. Starting disciplines include racing, drifting, drag builds, off-roading, and runner work. A new discipline, speedcross, was added later through a post-launch update.

  • You’ll need to buy cars from their matching dealerships for each discipline.
  • Derelict cars are scattered across the map. Recovering all their parts lets you restore them.
  • Need For Speed Payback

  • A derelict car can later be upgraded into a “superbuild” tailored to a specific discipline.
  • You begin with limited car storage. Unlocking all garages with bank increases storage to unlimited.

Upgrade Cards System

The upgrade approach shifts away from directly buying parts like in the previous title. Instead, you use cards that can boost a vehicle’s traits.

  • If you match three or six cards of the same brand, you’ll activate stronger bonuses.
  • Cards come from shipments or by purchasing them directly from Tune-Up Shops around the map.

Customization and Vehicle List

Customization is largely similar to the 2015 version, but new vanity items must be obtained through shipments rather than bought outright.

Payback includes 74 vehicles total, with additional downloadable content. Due to licensing restrictions, Toyota, Scion, and Ferrari are not featured. Still, the Subaru BRZ does appear.

Several brands return after missing in the 2015 entry: Aston Martin, Audi, Buick, Jaguar, Koenigsegg, Land Rover, Mercury, Pagani, and Plymouth. Downloadable content also adds Alfa Romeo, Infiniti, Mini, and Pontiac.

Useful Tips

Work with Speed Cards

  • To view all Speed Cards on your vehicle, open the garage and go to Performance Customisation.
  • There you can see your currently equipped Speed Cards. Select a specific card to find out which other cards are being hidden by stronger options.
  • You can adjust your layout there and trade in cards you don’t need anymore.
  • Remember: matching three Speed Cards of the same brand—and even better, matching six—grants improved stats and perks from your deck.

Switch Cars Only at Races or in the Garage

  • Unlock the four garages spread across the map. This isn’t just for extra storage.
  • Each garage acts like a free fast-travel point for that specific race, cutting travel time in half when you want to replay it.
  • It’s also one of the main ways to switch between characters and vehicles.
