Magic: The Gathering Arena Introduction

Magic: The Gathering Arena Magic: The Gathering Arena is a strategy collectible card game for Android. Win matches, complete daily quests, draft cards, and customize decks. Play Constructed or Limited to earn rewards, cards, and gems.

Magic: The Gathering Arena

Magic: The Gathering Arena is a collectible card game built for mobile play, where you expand your collection by winning matches and finishing daily missions. As you earn cards, you assemble stronger decks and jump into multiple play modes.

In Draft events, you take turns selecting cards from a rotating pool presented by the game. You then use those picks to fight against seven other players.

In Open matches, you choose the right cards from a much larger card pool to face other players. Success comes from using the right card at the right moment—adapting to what’s happening on the field, outplaying opponents, and pushing toward rewards like new cards and gems.

The game is actively updated, with new cards and events added regularly. Stay tuned—there’s always something new.

Gameplay

Magic: The Gathering Arena

Magic: The Gathering Arena follows the same core rules as the physical card game. You build decks that include land cards, which produce five separate mana colors. You spend that mana to play cards—summoning creatures, casting spells that deal damage or provide protection, and activating abilities and other effects.

You then battle other players using your chosen deck. The main objective is simple: bring your opponent’s life total down to zero before they do the same to you.

Constructed vs. Limited

Magic: The Gathering Arena

MTG Arena offers both Constructed and Limited formats.

Constructed play: Build your deck from your card library. New players start with a starter collection—base cards and pre-made decks built from them. As you win matches and complete daily quests, you earn booster packs that add cards to your library, letting you customize and improve your deck over time.

Booster pack card counts (MTG Arena): Unlike many physical booster packs (which often include 15–16 playable cards), packs in MTG Arena contain 8 cards total, including: 1 Mythic/Rare, 2 Uncommon, and 5 Common.

Limited play: The most popular Limited mode is Booster Draft. Here, you draft with seven other players, taking cards in turn from game-supplied packs. After drafting, you build a Limited deck for the event.

Another Limited option is Sealed, where you open a set number of special booster packs and build a deck using only cards from those packs.

In both Limited modes, your goal is to win as many matches as possible with your drafted/sealed deck.

Magic: The Gathering Arena

  • Best-of-one: The event ends once you reach 7 wins or 3 losses.
  • Best-of-three: The event ends after you complete 3 matches, no matter your results.

In most Limited events, you keep the cards you drafted and add them to your library. Prizes are typically tied to your win results and may include booster packs or in-game currency.

Match Formats and Hand Smoothing

MTG Arena supports best-of-three and best-of-one for both Limited and Constructed.

In best-of-one, opening hands aren’t generated purely at random. Instead, the client creates multiple candidate hands and then chooses one based on characteristics of your deck.

To reduce swingy outcomes caused by best-of-one, the game includes hand-smoothing. The full algorithm details are not publicly disclosed.
